John Mills (otherwise Smoaker) found guilty on an indictment for the murder of Richard Hawkins, by joining with others and beating him to death with whips and sticks in the parish of Slindon on 28th January 1748.  After execution his body was hanged in chains on Slindon Common.  He was son/brother of the two Richard Mills hanged the earlier that year.
